Wintertime comes with a lot of driving challenges, not least of which is icy windshields. If you’re just relying on your car heating up to melt the ice on your windshield, you’ll be waiting a long time. Here are some tips on how to quickly de-ice your windshield.
DIY de-icing spray
Mix two parts rubbing alcohol and one part water together in a spray bottle and spray it on your windshield. The ice will melt away in seconds. You can also try mixing together water and road salt or even table salt to melt the ice, but be careful to spray directly on the windshield and avoid the metal.
Windshield wiper fluid
Get de-icing windshield wiper fluid so you can spray your windshield from the comfort of the driver’s seat while waiting for the car to heat up and help with defrosting.
If you want to prevent ice from getting on your windshield in the first place, you can use a cover to protect it from frost and snow overnight.
Things not to do
Never pour hot water on your windshield. The abrupt change in temperature can break the glass and leave you with a costly repair. You also don’t want to pound on the ice, as this can also damage the glass and leave scratches or cracks.
